Sarah's Practice

Sarah Jones is a psychotherapist, and psychoanalysis and counselling practitioner with 25 years experience. She works with adults, adolescents and couples.

QUALIFICATIONS AND STUDIES: Graduate Diploma of Psychological Studies - Deakin University; Psychoanalysis - Freudian School of Melbourne; Graduate Diploma of Analytic Psychotherapy - The Churchill Clinic Inc.; Advanced Diploma of Psychotherapy - Churchill Clinic; Bachelor of Arts Hon - Murdoch University.

PROFESSIONAL ASSOCIATION: Clinical Member, Psychotherapy And Counselling Federation of Australia, PACFA Reg. 20531.

Sarah's practice methods draw from extensive experience in longer term therapy and psychodynamic therapy; from trauma informed practice; and shorter term strengths based and solution focused counselling.

Sarah is curious about each patient's obstacles and avenues towards being genuine, connected and creative in their life directions and relationships with the important people in their lives.

She works with a deep, collaborative listening to the patient. This enables the patient to have a greater influence on the progress and style of their treatment.

Through the professional relationship and therapeutic work, patients come to understand more about the effects of their life histories and their deeper motivations. Patients experience how they contribute to creating their challenges, along with making helpful changes in their approaches to these issues and to their relationships.

Giving and receiving with another person is too often an occasion for uncertainty, strong emotions or closing down emotionally. In the professional relationship patients are invited to be open and have new experiences with someone who is separate from their everyday life.

Sarah's patients benefit from an accepting, open space where they can explore their challenges, pain, joys and capabilities.

Treatments

Treatment

Share, explore, develop healthier coping; recovery from pain and conflicts.

Sarah assists patients to increase their sense of empowerment in themselves and improve their mental health, relationships and wellbeing.

Her work spans stress, grief and loss, addiction, couple counselling, mental health and trauma recovery.

Patients often come to explore self-acceptance, wellness and fulfilment in their lives and relationships.

Treatments address

  • healthy stress management

  • recovery and coping methods for trauma

  • living with and recovery from anxiety, depression and other mental health conditions

  • communication and conflict resolution

Sarah embraces a trauma informed practice and experiential approaches in all her work. Patients are encouraged to allow for deeper emotional connection and to be more real and expressive. Sarah offers consideration and deep attention to the patient; and supports patients to practice care for themselves.

Trauma Therapy Recovery Counselling

Sarah provides a safe and accepting place for people who have experienced sexual abuse; childhood or recent trauma; PTSD or complex trauma.

Patients approach their experiences and trauma recovery at their own pace, with attention to feeling safe in sessions and in life in general. Sessions aim to foster healthy coping, empowerment, and becoming freer from restrictions and symptoms.

Couple Counselling

Sarah assists couples to communicate their needs and wants and develop new relationship dynamics. Emotional expression, differences, life goals and sexuality are areas that are often explored.

The experience in the counselling session focuses on connecting with feelings; supports safe expression of vulnerability and fear; change regarding frustration and anger; along with deepening honesty and improving communication. Processes also include clarifying goals and ways to approach them.

At times couples find that their best use of the counselling is to understand their need to separate, and approach this with more kindness and collaboration.

Overall, Sarah aims to facilitate couples to expand the value, acceptance and appreciation they feel for each other, and their enjoyment of the relationship.

Diversity

Sarah respects that people with LGBTIQA+ identities or identifying as non-binary; people of colour; and those who have any area of diversity may experience being vulnerable and less accepted.

Understanding that diversity often involves particular challenges and sometimes suffering, Sarah also acknowledges and celebrates the qualities of patients with diverse identities and areas of difference.

Through psychotherapy and strength based counselling patients are assisted to find ways to manage their everyday life challenges; deepen self acceptance and relationships,  and embrace fulfilment and meaning in their lives.

Women's Treatments

A women's specific circumstances in their culture and in society, and learning about this from the patient, are important to how Sarah approaches therapy or counselling with women. Patients often present with concerns over mental health and trauma, grief and loss, addiction or challenging life circumstances.

Where women are experiencing family violence, Sarah will firstly address the safety of the women and children.

Sarah assists each woman to create better connections with their feelings, a stronger sense of voice and capacity to realise personal and professional goals. Treatments include coping skills for and recovery from mental health conditions.

Men's Treatments

Sarah has extensive experience in counselling and therapy with men through working with Mensline Australia, Mates in Construction, war veterans and men who are incarcerated.

Men in treatment may need to improve their overall health and relationships. Relationship issues are explored through deepening acceptance and expression of feelings; and, if relevant, ways to better manage anger and frustration. Relationship issues might also include looking at how sexuality is being expressed in their relationship.

Men also frequently seek assistance with life fulfilment, self-expression,  addiction or sense of identity; along with addressing anxiety, depression and other mental health conditions.
